Irish Terriers are medium-sized dogs. They are tall due to the long straight legs. The body is muscular, yet should not appear too massive. The Irish Terrier has a long muzzle "dressed" with a beard. The nose is always black. The ears fold forward. The tail is usually docked to three quarters of its original length.

The Irish Terrier has a long history. It was developed in Ireland to help hunters pursue the fox, otter, and other game. The breed was also used to kill vermin. During World War I, the Irish Terrier was used as a military dog. It was also good for the show ring. Nowadays, the breed is not that popular as it once was. It is rarely seen in a show ring or as a pet.

Irish Terriers - Temperament

Irish Terriers have peculiarities that are adored by some people and disliked by others. The breed is very bold and energetic. It makes a good watchdog and a playmate. The Irish Terrier enjoys long hiking tours and will surely be a good choice for people actively involved in sports.

However, the Irish Terrier may not be suited for households with other pets. This courageous dog rarely needs canine company. It can be aggressive with dogs and other pets. Therefore, the breed is not recommended for families with other pets.

Though the Irish Terrier is suspicious of strangers, it is affectionate towards its owners. To avoid undesired actions, Irish Terriers should be trained from an early age.

Irish Terriers - Training

Training is essential for Irish Terriers. These dogs have a strong protection and hunting instinct. This can be of inconvenience sometimes. Early socialization will ease the process of training in the future. Though the breed can be slightly difficult to train, one should spare no pains to do it. It should be kept in mind that Irish Terriers can be willful. Use positive reinforcement during training.

Irish Terriers - Living Conditions

The Irish Terrier is an energetic dog. It needs a good deal of exercise and is best with a small yard. Make sure the dog is not left alone for long periods of time. Irish Terriers are great diggers. They can destroy a flowerbed in no time. The breed can also be suited for apartment dwellers. The dog tends to be well mannered and quiet indoors on the condition that it is exercised sufficiently.
